Understanding the Cell Biology of Axons and Synapses for Better Human Health

The Bhattacharya lab, located in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Arizona, focuses on understanding basic tenets of axon and synapse biology. We study synaptic growth, membrane trafficking, autophagy, and axon maintenance pathways. Our work impacts many aspects of medicine including pain, motor control, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative disease.
We take a comparative genetic approach to answering questions about the nervous system, using two model organisms: Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) and mouse, with recent forays into human stem cell-derived neurons in vitro.
